unitedstreaming and you!

There are tons of ways to use unitedstreaming with students…from watching videos to fully integrated units. How have you used unitedstreaming so far this year? Even if just for yourself, share a comment, share a tip, share a secret. Let’s get it all out in the open.

I’ve been so excited to see that many elementary teachers are using unitedstreaming! From showing videos and video segments to using Quiz Builder to finding images, there are tons of ways to incorporate this powerful software into the curriculum.

In thinking about using unitedstreaming from what I’ve heard, it seems that there are some obvious steps to making it work for everyone. Here’s what I’ve gleaned:

Step 1: Search for and show a video or video segment - whole class
Step 2: Use a video or video segment as a preview/review of content - whole class
Step 3: Do either Step 1 or Step 2, but for individual students
Step 4: Create a project (.wmv, .ppt, .pps) that includes a video, video segment, image
Step 5: Add additional activities (Quiz, project, internet links) to Step 4 to stretch the video and increase student thinking
Step 6: ??

What do you think? Where do you stand? How are your students reacting? Share, share, share!

  1. Unitedstreaming something that I can’t talk about enough. I was very excited to attend a 5 day workshop with people all over the east coast to talk, share about what we do in our classrooms with this great site.
We are very lucky to be one of the districts that supports us in using unitedstreaming. My students get very excited when they see an LCD projector in my classroom. This year I started making review games using powerpoint templates. Occasionally, a question will have a video question which are always class favorites! Please try and use unitedstreaming whenever to keep motivating our students.

  2. I have been impressed with the clarity and quality of the videos available on Unitedstreaming. Most are available in segments, so valuable classtime is not lost on long videos- you can use only the segments that apply to your lesson. Also, using the clips inside of another program, such as powerpoint, may increase student understanding. I placed a video clip on Chinese calligraphy inside of a Google earth tour of the Forbidden City. We started at Baresville and then “flew” to China. The third grade students (who recently learned about maps) could see exactly where China was, what the Forbidden City looked like, and then watch a short clip on a master calligrapher from China. The presentation only lasted 10 minutes and was more interesting than I could have explained in words!

  3. I am excited to begin using unitedstreaming in the classroom. I’ve been looking at some clips to use with the current science and LA units I am teaching. However, I am waiting for speakers for my computer and for the LCD projector to be fixed at Manheim so I can use it.

  4. I have used it twice and love the idea of just using clips that can kick off a unit of study. My problem was the sound. I could not get it loud enough when showing it on the TV. We need speakers when using it whole group.

  5. Speakers are on order for all classrooms! Hopefully they’ll arrive sometime next week!@

  6. Unitedstreaming has brought real life into the classroom. My students instantly see what I am teahing. It is a great tool for all types of learners. In closing, what else can I say about those speakers on order, but woo-hoo!

  7. I used a unitedstreaming clip in the lab today entitled The Living Cell. It is the story of two kids playing Cell-ebrity Squares. It was PERFECT for the 5th grade Cell Unit! I highly recommend it to any 5th grade science teachers.

  8. I use Chicka Chicka Boom Boom as a center at the beginning of the year. If you teach with this book, you need to use this video. The students LOVE it!

It’s a great way for the students to hear the names of the letters integrated with great language and a lively song.

  9. My students watched a US video for our first reading theme, Nature’s Fury. They loved it and were so excited to get into the stories to learn more!

  10. The inservice on Monday tied in nicely with United Streaming content. we have all this available. does U.S. have an audio section?

  11. They do! I’m not sure just what you’re looking for exactly, but the Search Within box allows searches for Audio:Songs and Audio:Sound Effects. If there’s another type of audio you’re looking for, let me know and I’ll make the suggestion to our field rep.

  12. I used several unitedstreaming clips in a .pps to review our light unit. We all went to the lab and the students watched video clips and answered multiple choice questions. It had to be one of the easiest and most interesting review lessons I’ve ever done. Another thing that I thought was great was the the videos contained some information above and beyond what we learned in class. I ended up with a great review and extension all in one!

Another bonus: I’ve never heard the lab that quiet with 28 kids in it before!
