Listening and Coaching

The big idea from the morning presentation  for me is that to be a good coach, you need to be a good listener. Having never coached a sport before, I always saw coaches as the person that tells everyone else what to do. The person that made the plans and made sure everyone on the team executed the plan to meet with success.

As our district moves ahead with the Classrooms for the Future initiative, I realize my role as coach is to listen to the teachers, listen to the students and listen to the parents. After hearing all they have to say, it’s then my role to take their thoughts and their plans and put them into action. Really, I guess I’ll be doing what they want me to do while trying to meet the goals of the program. That’s a shift for me – but in this situation it seems everyone is shifting and it’s only fair that I shift too!
