Reflecting on Reasons

Like Kristin Hokanson over at Connected Classroom, I too read the Vicki Davis post - Why I Blog and the Perils of Perfection. After reading that post and Kristin’s Stuck in a Rut post, I spent a fair amount of time thinking about my purposes for joining the blogosphere. I discovered some interesting things about my reasons. Here goes!

I blog to…get thoughts out of my head. Initially when I started posting to this blog it was to put ideas in front of teachers. My main reason has changed – (as has the name of the blog). Now when I hear a news report, see a video or participate in a discussion on many different topics I instantly begin crafting a blog post in my mind. I’d say that maybe 1 in 10 of these mind blog posts ever gets to the written stage and sometimes that one doesn’t even make it to the blog. I’ve discovered that just the thought process of blogging has increased my reflection time, even if the post doesn’t come to fruition.

I blog to…work on my writing skills. It’s been a long time since I did much writing of any real substance. I’ve never been a journaler, but find that I enjoy the process that goes with writing a blog post. The thinking part, the composing part and the reworking part have all proven valuable to me.

I blog to…be a part of something that I think is pretty important. I began by reading blogs and maybe commenting once in a while. I guess it’s a natural progression to want to have a say of my own in my own space. Being able to post my thoughts on technology and education, share items from my Reader, tag links that I find useful for teaching and learning, as well as connect with folks has made blogging worthwhile for me.

I blog to…learn more about blogging. I enjoy figuring out how this all works.

  1. Reflection is such an important part of what we do and understanding why we blog keeps us blogging. I think the whole idea of working on ourselves will keep us going!
