Measuring Up

In the past 6 months, I have attended more workshops, conferences and trainings than ever before in such a short time. I love to learn new things, so I balance the time away from my family with the knowledge I gain.

The one problem I’ve discovered is that when I’m at these workshops, I find myself hearing what other people are doing and measuring myself against their accomplishments. This is dangerous! What happens is that I leave the workshop feeling overwhelmed about I’m not doing or what I don’t know.

Here’s the funny thing, the more people I talk to, the more I realize that everyone is comparing themselves and feeling like they’re not doing enough! When, in fact, everyone at the workshops is doing great things. Instead of celebrating ourselves for our new learning and gains, we seem to be spending more time on the negative.

I say, no more! From now on, when I hear what someone else is doing, instead of feeling bad about myself I’m going to congratulate that person and store the knowledge away for later. I’ll also make every effort to add that person to my network. Then when the time comes that I want to implement something that I’ve heard somewhere else, I’ll know where to go to learn more.

  1. Amen, sister-friend. Well put and great advice!

  2. Yay Michelle - I couldn’t agree more! I know I feel that way very often and although I know that I shouldn’t it’s very difficult not to feel ‘up to par’. But I’ll try and take your advice into account when I’m feeling less-than-adequate

  3. I think that is exactly what I needed to get me out of this rut that I am in…well said Michelle and I’m going to put your plan in action myself.

  4. We all have our own niche. Let’s use a hypothetical 100 tools/strategies. I try to balance myself by saying I’ll be really good at 10, proficient at 80, and need work on 10. That way I am motivated to continue to learn while keeping my ego in check. :-)

  5. Michelle,
Great post…I really look forward to all that you add to my learning with your experiences as a CFF coach.
