Snapshot of the World

Information about the 100 People Foundation came to my inbox today and it is well worth sharing. If the world population was distilled down to 100 people, but keeping accurate proportions, the make up of the 100 people population would be 50 females and 50 males; 20 would be children, 80 would  be adults – 14 of whom would be 65 and older, …  The 100 People Foundation has developed a project to showcase the 100 people that would make up this world portrait.

The 100 People Foundation challenges schools to find and capture in film, photography, music and text 100 individuals who represent the global population, proportionate to annual global surveys and statistics. This World Portrait will be used to make an introduction between the peoples of the earth and to facilitate a greater understanding of who shares the planet. View the trailer video for all the details.

The foundation offers a very helpful lesson plan for nominations, as well as other supplemental materials.  The site also provides examples of images, videos, statistics, projects, directions on how to enroll a school, and a list of schools around the world that are participating.  The red dots on the map show the participating schools and it’s nice to see that there are three Pennsylvania middle schools on the list!

Wouldn’t it be great if your students had a part in developing the World Portrait?

Another nice video that demonstrates the principal is The Miniature Earth.
